All you need to know about Steven Hale and the world of watches

We are proud to be Accredited by TAG Heuer for the servicing, repair and restoration of their watches for both modern and vintage models. We thought you might be interested to learn more about this iconic watch brand.

A History of TAG Heuer Watches

Heuer Watches is one of the oldest Swiss watch brands. Founded as far back in time as 1860 by Edouard Heuer, from its very early days the company focussed on technical innovation.

In 1914 Heuer introduced its first wristwatch, with the crown in the 12 o’clock position as it was based on a traditional pocket watch. Then only two years later it introduced the iconic ‘Mikrograph’. This was the first stopwatch accurate to within 1/100 of a second.

Heuer soon became established as high quality sports watches, able to capture every fraction of a second of performance. They soon became the favourite of motor sport enthusiasts and professionals, becoming the official timekeeper of many leading races. It was even the very first brand to sponsor the Formula 1 World Championship.

The Golden Age of Heuer Watches

The 1960’s were the golden age for the brand. The Heuer Carrera was launched in 1963, truly capturing the romance and danger of racing. Steve McQueen famously was wearing a Heuer Monaco in the 1971 film Le Mans.

In 1985 The company was purchased to become part of the TAG Group.

Nowadays the brand continues its long association with high performance sports, partnering with the Oracle Red Bull Racing team and The Porsche Formula E Racing team in the world’s first all-electric road racing series.

What is the rarest TAG Heuer watch?

The rarest TAG Heuer watch is the 6000 SERIES PLATINUM CHRONOMETER. Made in 1994 it was the company’s flagship model and the culmination of the diver’s watch development. Only 99 were made in a choice of steel, platinum, yellow and white gold.

In November 22 an 18k gold model 6000 series was sold by Christie’s for CHF 5796 (approx. £5,178).

How often should a TAG Heuer Watch be serviced?

This is a common question. With regular wear a TAG Heuer watch should be serviced every five to six years, or sooner if there are signs of distress such as gaining or losing time.

However as these are sports watches they are often worn around water.  In this case it’s important to have your TAG Heuer tested for water resistance every two years, as the sealing gaskets age and corrode when exposed to water. And please, never wear your watch in the shower. The hot water can cause condensation inside your watch case which will cause corrosion and untold damage.

We regularly service Tag Heuer watches. Here’s a modern Aquaracer we recently serviced and polished.

How much does it cost to service a TAG Heuer Watch?

Costs for servicing your TAG Heuer Mechanical watch start from £400. Costs for servicing TAG Heuer Chronographs start from £500. Final costs will vary, according to the age and condition of your watch.

SHWR is an authorised TAG Heuer service centre. This means our watchmakers are trained by TAG and we have access to genuine new parts.

How long will it take to service my TAG Heuer Watch?

With eight watchmakers in our workshop, we can fully service modern TAG watches in 4-6 weeks. Vintage models will take longer and we will advise you once we inspect your watch.

The popular TAG Heuer watches serviced by Steven Hale include the Aquaracer, Formula 1, Carrera and Monaco models.

Rolex Oysterdate - Howard W

What our customers had to say

"Incredible restoration of my vintage watch - highly recommend!"
"
I picked up my 64 year old watch today from Steven Hale after Rolex themselves referred me. I've waited 6 months to be reunited with it (due to it being a vintage), and I am beyond chuffed! I have previously taken the watch to a specialist but was turned away due to its age. But for the first time in years, the experts at Steven Hale have made it work like new. I applaud the excellent team of knowledgeable staff both in the workshop, but also in the showroom, who explained all my options in meticulous detail. This watch has been passed down three generations and I'm so pleased to have it back in full working order. I couldn't recommend Steven Hale enough for anyone with a special vintage watch, unsure of the best place to get it restored."

What our customers had to say

"My great grand-father's Breguet was given to me by my father for my 21st birthday. 30 years later, post restoration by SHWR, it is in far better shape than I have ever seen it. SHWR's craftsmanship is immaculate. The firm is polite, professional and honest. Outstanding - I cannot recall another occasion when I have been so favourably impressed."

What our customers had to say

"I have just had my 1934 Rolex Oyster repaired. From start to finish I had full confidence in every one I had contact with at Steven Hale. They have been very efficient in identifying the problems at the initial examination and dealing with them as promised. There were no nasty surprises and unexpected complications along the way. Because of the age of my watch, spares are not available, and new parts have had to be made - all very expertly done. They even polished the gold case and my 86yr old watch now looks as good as new. You can certainly trust these people with your precious timepieces."

What our customers had to say

"I had bought a 1970s Pepsi GMT at auction and it needed some work. The lume on the hands was breaking up. Rolex UK wanted some hilarious price and threatened to replace the hands with new ones if their work failed - all at my expense of course. Steven Hale and co managed to repair the hands and maintain the original patina of the 40 plus year old watch which was of course crucial! Highly recommended."

Johan

What our customers had to say

"These are watch lovers and it shows. Their meticulous craftsmanship and expertise make them unique in London and I suspect that only in Switzerland may their equivalents be found. The experience of Steven Hale Watch Restoration begins with the talented and charming individuals who are client facing in South Molton Street and who instil a confidence that is consequently fully fulfilled. This firm represents unequalled talent in its field as well as exceptional client service. I have seldom recommended anyone with greater conviction."
